Oh How Television and Radio Have Changed!

I miss Sonny Eliot. When I was a kid you turned on the radio at home and our rock and roll station was different than the rock and roll station at my cousin’s house in New York. If you road tripped with your family in the station wagon, you could go through some states that didn’t even have rock and roll stations. Some states only seemed to have country music. When I’d get together with our cousins in New York we’d talk about the television shows “they got” versus the shows “we got.” There were always discrepancies and we’d say “Oh, man, you’ve got THIS show?” Or we’d say, “you DON’T get that show?” It made for great conversation in the first 30 minutes of a reunion.

It’s interesting.  I had a meeting today with what I hope will become a future StoryTeller client.  The subject: online video.  It seems to be the topic most gravitated to in our meetings with business’ and organizations today.  It appears to be what’s on everyone’s mind.  YouTube…specifically.  There was a revelation that I had during this meeting.  I initially met this future client about (5) months ago, and the discussion albeit very similar (defining what makes a solid video strategy) the method of implementing the strategy was completely different!

When I left television news in 2005, it came on the heels of an abrupt and obvious realization - I had no street value. I came to terms with the fact that if I left WCCO-TV, the station that hired me 5 years earlier, no other stations would rush in and scoop me up. I simply realized that I just wasn’t as valuable as I always thought I was.

I’ve had a job every year of my life since the age of nine.  It started with a paper route - six days a week rain or shine or minus 30-degree wind chill.  After that came four years of baby-sitting, followed by a stint in fast food before spending the next seven years in retail.

Heidi:  Go ahead.

Ed:  Roll cue to VO is:  ”something went horribly wrong.”

Heidi:  Roll cue to SOT?

Several years ago U.S. Olympian and World Cup ski racer Bode Miller was at Buck Hill ski area in Burnsville, MN for an autograph signing.  Buck Hill is the little bump in the ground that produced world class skiers Kristina Koznick and Lindsey Vonn, by the way.  Nonetheless, as an avid skier and fan of the sport I was thrilled to learn, through a PR flack that Miller was going to be in town and available for interviews.

Last week, WCCO-TV in Minneapolis announced they were relieving popular anchor Jeanette Trompeter “of her duties,” citing the struggling economic times as the primary cause.  Many station employees expressed their sadness on places like Facebook since Jeanette was as popular within the station walls as she was outside them.

When I first heard about Children’s Home Society & Family Services (CHSFS) I was working as a reporter in Minneapolis for WCCO-TV.  A co-worker was married to the marketing and promotions director whose responsibility was to raise awareness for the CHSFS Polo Classic, a fundraiser they now no longer host. Regardless, their cause at the time resonated with me as they helped families through international adoption.
