How the role of public relations has changed

Public relations professionals are known for their communication skills. However, when asked to communicate what it is a public relations professional actually does, many (including myself) come up short. How do you succinctly describe a job that encompasses everything from media relations to social media to collateral material creation to event planning to marketing? Even the textbook definition of public relations leaves something to be desired:

Public relations helps an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other.

This has been the formal definition since 1982. But how can we expect anything from 1982 be relevant in today’s ever-changing communication world? Needless to say, the Public Relation Society of America’s (PRSA) campaign to redefine PR is long overdue.

How Much Does it Cost to Produce a Video? Depends.

Over the past 6 years we’ve produced a number of videos for our clients, who are both non-profits and Fortune 500 organizations. Regardless of how large or small our clients, they all have budgets to which they’re trying to adhere and invariably, they all ask, “how much will it cost to produce our video?” To which, we essentially respond, “it depends.” This isn’t a response that is meant to be flippant, it’s just that there is a broad range when it comes to video production costs.

Hello World…Again! Our New Website is LIVE!

When Tiger Woods turned pro in 1996, he announced the news to the media by simply saying, “Hello World,” in his news release. So, when our website developer Randall Larson co-owner of Thorn Creative, set up some demo blogs for us, one of which was titled “Hello World,” I had a good chuckle, remembering the simplicity, yet power, of that message. If only we could sign $60 million in endorsements as Tiger did right after he made his announcement!
