A Social Media Mistake: A Case Study of Online Customer Service
Social Media Misstep: A Case Study
In this relatively new age of social media marketing, so many businesses are finding their way. Some have catapulted their businesses into overnight successes, while others are plodding along trying to figure things out and then there are those who are still on the sideline. Nevertheless, it seems daily there are new case studies of both social media best practices and worst practices.
Recently, here in Minnesota, those of us in the PR and social media space witnessed a faux pas that reminded us of the power of online marketing. A Minneapolis-based, family owned, liquor and cheese shop, ran into a buzz saw of online public opinion that left customers irate and the company stuck on mute. This store, which claims to be the largest of its kind in the midwest, has been a one-stop shop destination for the biggest selections of wines, cheeses and beer.
Video of the Week: “These Boots Were Made For Walkin’”
Ever wonder how those boots were made? And where? Check out this video of the week. Not only is it a great story from Minnesota’s Own - Red Wing Shoe Company, but the video is beautifully shot and very well done. (And our apologies if you now have that song stuck in your head!)
Wag, Walk and Run Hosted by Helping Paws
This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend, and get video of, the annual Wag, Walk & Run Event, hosted by Helping Paws, at Purgatory Creek in Eden Prairie. This was the second year I was able to go, and I am always impressed with the turnout. The rain held off just long enough to keep everyone dry, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. (video after the jump)
How Long Should Your Online Video Be?
We’re asked this question quite a bit and the answer varies depending on the audience, but by and large, we think brevity is the key when posting online content. For example, this video is a speedy 28-seconds!

Networking For You AND Your Clients
Every so often I get emails or calls from people saying they’ve heard great things about our agency and that they’d like to get together to see if there’s a networking opportunity between our companies. More times than not I feel like I’m being fluffed up for a pitch so that I might be inclined to send that person some business when, and if, there’s an opportunity. I used to go into these get-togethers with my guard up.
Westin Edina Galleria and MN Bride Host Look of Love
Okay all you newly engaged people, you’ll be interested to know there’s a fabulous Bridal Fair you won’t want to miss on Saturday, February 5 from 11:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. at the Westin Edina Galleria. Here’s the skinny - top vendors in the area will be there, a runway fashion show, prizes and passed hors d’oeuvres. McCormick & Schmick’s is providing sparkling wine and best of all if you register for the event by February 2nd it’s free. Otherwise, admission is $20 at the door.
Should be a fantastic opportunity for brides-to-be and their family and friends to see the best in attire, flowers, photography and entertainment for their upcoming wedding. You can get more info here.
Great Use of Editing and YouTube
A friend of mine showed me this video last week. Not only was I completely blown away by the way it was put together using stop motion, but it’s author, who goes by the name MysteryGuitarMan, has done an amazing job of working with the YouTube format. He posts regularly, every Tuesday and Thursday, and speaks directly to the camera in his videos, creating a bond with his viewers and giving the videos a very personal feel. Also, in each video, he has links to at least two of his other videos.
Check out his YouTube channel when you have the chance. It’s very impressive.
Technology in the Classroom
Now that we’re in to a new year, I’ve made it a priority to start sharing more of our video work via our website. Often times, we get so busy doing the work we do that I don’t make a point to share it with those who aren’t directly involved with the project.
The video I’m sharing today is one we shot, produced and edited for the Eden Prairie School district. It’s one of several videos we did for the district in 2010. The district wanted to show prospective students and their families, as well as parents of current students, how the schools are using technology to increase learning in the classroom. Teachers are using everything from smart boards and tables to iPads and iTouches to get students interested and involved in what they’re learning. Check it out.
Who is Following You on Twitter?
It used to be that whenever I received a notification that someone was following me on Twitter that I would get a little excited thinking, “hey, I’m building a nice little group of followers.” However, as Twitter has grown and changed and become infiltrated by marketers and people schlepping product, I find myself asking more and more, “why does this person want to follow me?”
Chicago Golf Show Highlights
We had a great trip to the Windy City last weekend at the Chicago Golf Show. Joined by John Kendall of Giants Ridge, Chris Foley of Madden’s on Gull Lake and Leah Tomasetti of The Wilderness at Fortune Bay we came in contact with thousands of golf fanatics. Here are a few of the highlights from our trip, including some fantastic testimonials from Chicagoland golfers. Thanks for a great trip!
