Removing Barriers for Peak Performance
We all have them. They keep us from doing what we need to do, from becoming a better business person, employee, father, mother, daughter, son, etc. They are often irrational, aggravating and in some cases draining. I’m talking about barriers in your life. If you’ve been meaning to do something, but just haven’t done it because “something” always gets in your way, you probably know what I’m referring to - it’s that “something.”
A couple years ago I purchased Tony Horton’s DVD set, P90X (Here’s a plug for P90X: It’s the toughest workout I’ve ever had in my life) and my wife and I ripped through the entire 90-day workout three times. Sequestered in our unfinished basement amongst kids toys, video games, dust, debris, junk and clutter, we dutifully hung from the pull-up bar and kissed the floor doing push-ups more times than I care to recall, but then we got away from it.
As more clutter accumulated and disarray reigned over our workout area, our little garden of fitness became overrun by weeds. It needed a change, a transformation, in fact, the whole basement needed to be re-organized. A small mess became a major barrier for us to get back to Tony’s boot camp. I should add, when you work as hard as you work in P90X, it’s easy to allow barriers to creep into your life.
Long story short, I realized that the lack of organization was a barrier for me and my wife to resume our routine. So, I moved some furniture around and created a “Kid Cave” where they could plop on retired couches and play video games on an old television. The “cave” was far from a new work out area that I created with foam flooring and an area for dumb bells that lie mostly uninterrupted and now we’re back in action.
As is the case at home, there are similar barriers that exist in your professional life as well. What are yours? What prevents you from being the best professional that you can be? Take a moment and evaluate, then spring into action and remove the obstacles that menacingly sit between you and your potential.
