Remodel Your Bathroom in Three Easy Steps
I’ve moved many times – in fact, in 17 years of marriage I have had 2 apartments and 5 homes. One of my favorite things about my newest home is that I finally have a huge tub in my master bath; I can officially get my whole self under water all at one time! This was a major selling point for me in choosing this house, but the rest of the bathroom was not exactly what I was hoping for…
So in order to make my bathroom a place I can truly enjoy while I soak, I found ways to take the focus off the parts of the room I didn’t like and turn the attention somewhere else. There are three areas that you can look at in order to improve your bathroom, without necessarily doing a major remodel.

Your bathroom can be more than just a room of necessity; it can be an oasis.
The first area is furnishing. Is there an old outdated vanity that can be replaced with a new furniture-style vanity with sink and cupboards? Mine was so short (not to mention outdated) that I had my husband rip it out before we even moved in. I wanted to be sure we had NO CHOICE but to replace it – since having none meant a trip down the hall to brush teeth in the kids’ bath! That led to a much quicker installation of a fabulous new piece of furniture with a double sink, wonderful storage and a Tuscan style finish. Mirrors also fall into this category, as do towel racks and lighting. Try hooks instead of circle holders for hand towels, or replacing your “clip on” mirror with one that looks like art. “Hollywood bulbs” light fixtures are a thing of the past, so try an inexpensive updated one, which you can paint yourself to match your new furniture.
The second area is decorating. Can you update your wall color, add some art pieces or a new rug? In my bathroom the wall color was bland and cool toned, (like the tile I was trying to avoid thinking about, since I couldn’t afford to re-do it all!) so I hired a friend to create a beautiful faux finish on the walls using warm colors to soften the space while coordinating with my new focal point, the vanity. Next, I shopped at some bargain stores to find artwork to draw attention to the walls, instead of the floors. Add new, plush, coordinating towels and it will feel like a luxurious hotel!
The third area is ambiance. Can you change the atmosphere by adding a few elements? Is your bathroom functional at the expense of being enjoyable? Try adding some touches of warmth that change the look and feel. I added a candelabra above my tub, along with some extra candle holders around the tub to make it feel more relaxing. You can even add some elegant drapes instead of boring blinds to create a more extravagant feel. Adding photographs or personalized art also make it more personal, as opposed to stark and sterile.
Bathroom remodeling can be more achievable and fun than you think. By adding a few new things within your budget, you can forget about what you don’t like and focus on what you do – all without spending a fortune for a contractor or tearing the place apart!
