It may seem as though summer has barely started here in Minnesota, but in the design world, they’re already thinking fall.  I stopped by Hirshfield’s Design Studio a few days ago and asked Kathy Basil, the showroom manager, for her insights on color and design trends for this autumn.

  • Less (Manufactured) is more: In fabrics, furniture, and even appliances, the trend is toward more natural, pure pieces, evidence of the green movement’s stamp on the design world.  According to Kathy, “the trend toward a organic look is being reflected in all elements of design.  Even appliances are moving away from the polished, perfect stainless steel of the last few years toward graphite brushed stainless steel.”
  • The 80s are cool again: Soft pastels will be popular as accent pieces – think shades of purple, mauve and shell.  Geometrics will also be big in clothes, mirrors, rugs, jewelry and accent pieces.  Vintage pieces will be mixed in with traditional, classic pieces, again reflecting the shift toward staying eco-friendly — by reusing older items — across all channels of design.
Shell tones paints paired with natural fibers are on trend once again.

  • Organic Glamour: Although fabrics are included in the movement toward a more raw look, using natural fibers, they will also retain a metallic sheen.  Kathy showed me several samples that seemed to embody each of these trends: fabrics that were made largely of natural materials — and looked it — in shades of shell and greyed lilac, with metallic threads adding a bit of understated glamour.
Grayed shades and organic fibers with a hint of metallic sheen like these will continue to be popular.
